What is TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jawbone to your skull, allowing you to chew, speak, and move your jaw. When this joint becomes inflamed or misaligned, it can lead to a condition known as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). Common TMJ symptoms include:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness.

  • Clicking or popping sounds when moving the jaw.

  • Difficulty chewing or opening the mouth.

  • TMJ headaches or pain radiating to the ears, neck, or head.

Common Questions We Hear

Common TMJ symptoms include jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds, headaches, and difficulty opening or closing the mouth. Pain may also radiate to the head, ears, or neck.

Custom Mouth Guards for TMJ, also known as a night guard, helps protect your teeth and relieve pressure on the jaw joint:

  • Reduces teeth grinding and clenching.

  • Minimizes stress on the TMJ while you sleep.

  • Protects against further damage to teeth and jaw structures.

Sometimes, other treatments such as lifestyle and stress management, physical therapy, or a referral to a TMJ specialist are needed. We can evaluate your condition and see what we think would be the most beneficial for your situation.
